Autism expert to share tips for program design
Dr. Cathy Pratt, Ph.D., director of the Indiana Resource Center for Autism at the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community, will present a two day workshop at ACCC Aug. 25-26.
Continuing education hours and graduate credit are available.
“Designing Programs for Individuals Across the Autism Spectrum” will provide family members and professionals with practical recommendations on how to support and effectively educate students on the spectrum, including those with autism, Asperger’s Syndrome and other pervasive developmental disorders.
“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring Dr. Pratt, with her extensive background and commitment to autism, to Anne Carlsen Center for Children,” said Chief Operating Officer Marcia Gums, “and provide professionals and families the opportunity to further their education.”
The workshop will provide participants with practical information about:
• Addressing challenging behaviors and the role of crisis management
• Examining behaviors using a functional behavioral assessment approach
• Designing a behavior support plan that is realistic across various settings
• Determining curricular and individual instructional goals, including the importance of accountability
• Examining the broader
systems that support
individuals
• Adopting instructional approaches that are evidence-based
• Collaborating with families
Lee Grossman, former chairperson of the Autism Society of America board, said of Pratt, "She is one of the most highly-regarded leaders among professionals in the autism community, who demonstrates a strong commitment toward educating others about autism spectrum disorders and helping those
affected by autism."
Pratt’s areas of expertise and interest include autism spectrum disorders, functional behavior assessment/positive behavior supports, instructional approaches, systems change, and policy development.
