Seminar unlocks mystery of sensory disorders

Two noted experts in sensory integration disorders will lead a seminar at ACCC June 4–5, answering the question, "Is it sensory or is it behavior?"

"We are excited to bring Carolyn Murray-Slutsky and Betty Paris to Jamestown," said Chief Operating Officer Marcia Gums. "Some of our staff have attended their seminar before and rave about the useful information they were able to put into practice immediately."

Murray-Slutsky and Paris break down sensory modulation disorder (SMD) and provide specific intervention strategies for use in school, home and clinical settings to improve the functional performance of children with SMD, tactile discrimination and motor planning disorders.

They use a layering system to guide participants to a deep understanding of the complex interrelationship between sensory integrative, communication and behavioral problems seen in individuals with autism spectrum disorder, pervasive developmental delays and sensory integrative disorders.

The seminar, which is from 8:30 A.M.–4:30 P.M. both days, is designed for occupational and physical therapists, speech language pathologists, parents, support professionals, special educators, social workers, and medical professionals.

Contact hours have been approved by the North Dakota professional associations for social workers, nurses and speech language pathologists. Continuing education credit is approved through UND.

Murray-Slutsky, MS, OTR, is certified in sensory integration (SI) and neuro-developmental treatment (NDT) for pediatrics, infants and adults.

Paris, PT, M.Ed., has used her dual certificates in SI and NDT to develop a unique blend of treatments for children and young adults in a variety of settings and shared with therapists, parents and other professionals through educational seminars.

Their world-wide lectures and seminars are aimed at improving the functional performance of children with sensory and neurological problems.
