CommuniCamp for teens with disabilities

Applications are now being accepted for CommuniCamp, a unique week-long camp for teens with a wide array of disabilities including physical and communication impairments and behavioral challenges.

For the third summer, Anne Carlsen Center for Children of Jamestown, N.D. will partner with Elks Camp Grassick near Dawson, N.D., to provide a one-of-a-kind experience to teens that might not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in a summer camp.

CommuniCamp, July 24-29, supports and enhances the campers’ use of communication systems and technology to allow them to participate fully in the summer camping experience. Campers do not have to be ambulatory to attend CommuniCamp.

Applications for the specialized camp are being accepted through May 1 and are available on the ACCC website, www.annecenter.org, or by calling the Center at 1-800-568-5175.

The communication focus of this year’s camp provides individuals the opportunity to further develop social communication skills using technology adaptations. Social communication and technology use will be infused into all of the activities, from bingo, to campfire songs, to the talent show. Mixed in with functional learning activities are traditional camp favorites including hayrides, swimming in the lake, pontoon rides, bonfires, and recreation activities.

ACCC staff, along with staff from Camp Grassick, will be at the camp all week to assist campers to meet all care and leisure needs. ACCC therapists are also at the camp to meet campers’ therapeutic needs during the week.
