Safe and Efficient Eating with Special Needs Students
Brief Description:
Children with neurological deficits often have difficulty with feeding issues. This presentation is designed to cover the causes of dysphagia, as well as the anatomy and physiology of a normal swallow. Discussion of the importance of all team members contributing is stressed. Assessment and treatment considerations will be covered.
Objective:
• Audience will be aware of what to look for in identifying children who may be having problems with eating and understand the causes of dysphagia.
• Audience will be introduced to some basic treatment considerations.

Speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, parents, school nurses, and special education teachers

Presenters:
Ann Albrecht, MS-CCC/SLP has worked at the Anne Carlsen Center for the past 20 years. She has presented on numerous topics including assistive technology, augmentative communication, and feeding/dysphagia issues. Her special area of interest is in pediatric dysphagia.
Connie Lillejord, OTR/L has worked at the Anne Carlsen Center for Children for the past 13 years and the last eight years as the Director of Rehab services. She has worked and consulted for the South Central Infant Development program. Prior to becoming a director, she also, consulted with area nursing homes and numerous special education programs in the region.
Cost:
2 hour: $420
4 hour: $700
Per diem travel fee of $1 per mile, per presenter to and from Jamestown.
