Developing and assessing job skills is critical to helping individuals secure gainful employment. Assessment can be a powerful force. Not only can it motivate individuals, boost self-esteem and increase confidence, but conclusions drawn from assessment can be used to persuade employers and colleges that an individual has the potential to undertake a particular job or complete a training program. Anne Carlsen Center for Children provides practical recommendations about what a young adult (age 16-21) CAN do, giving the individual and potential employer useful feedback that can be used immediately.
Job Development: Training and support services include, Vocational Situational Skills Assessment, Functional Capacity Evaluation, Computer Skills Assessment, Adaptive Equipment Recommendations
Job Placement: Provides the advantage of having a skilled trainer assist the employee through the training period, as well as providing support and assistance to the employer with additional issues that may develop. May include follow-up monitoring as needed.
GRASP Employment Assessment: Completed at ACCC or in business settings this gives the businesses and client the opportunity to try various tasks and adaptive equipment to establish interests and potential employment opportunities. Young adults receiving assessments are observed and evaluated in a number of different areas including dependability, job attitudes, job effort, social skills, and personal traits.
From the results, vocational strengths and needs are determined and a list of suggested activities are recommended for educational teams/adult providers to use. These suggestions can assist in planning appropriate educational/employment experiences and living opportunities.
Functional Capacity Evaluation: An FCE uses objective and reliable measures to evaluate an individual’s physical abilities to perform work tasks. Completed by a licensed occupational therapist at ACCC, FCEs measure skills and abilities including muscle strength, range of motion, manual dexterity, hand usage and strength, sensory areas, repetitive functional activities, and lifting and material handling activities.
