Programs & Services
The Anne Carlsen Center for Children is licensed to provide residential
services to 56 children from birth to age 21. Our team of life skills
trainers helps the children with personal care, leisure activities
and individual needs. They support the children in planning, organizing
and participating in evening and weekend activities and accompany
them to the movies, restaurants, concerts, parades, walks, shopping
malls and other outings.
Many children are involved in extracurricular activities outside
the Center including 4-H, Sunday School and confirmation.
Five residential living areas accentuate home life.
The two dormitory-style areas have spacious bedrooms
where personal preferences are highly regarded to enhance each
child's living area. An open living area provides residents the
opportunity to share daily living activities including meals and
recreation.
Three cottages, located just yards from the main
campus, provide an optimal living environment to many of the older
residents who are at a point in life where they need to begin focusing
on more independent living skills. Each cottage has four single
rooms and two double rooms and features a warm décor in
the living room, dining and kitchen areas where students spend
time developing skills that include meal planning and preparation.
All residential areas are staffed 24-hours per day with life skills
trainers and nursing staff as necessary to meet the medical and
care needs of each resident.
Outside all residents can enjoy our adapted playground.
A nature trail running along the scenic James River offers students
the opportunity to explore the great outdoors. Garden areas give
children the opportunity to see if they have a green thumb!
